About
Thyroid Test
A thyroid test is a blood test that measures the levels of thyroid hormones in the body to assess the function of the thyroid gland. The primary hormones tested include Thyroxine (T4), Triiodothyronine (T3), and Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone (TSH). TSH, produced by the pituitary gland, regulates the production of T4 and T3 by the thyroid gland. An imbalance in these hormones can indicate various thyroid conditions, such as hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) or hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid).
Symptoms prompting a thyroid test may include fatigue, weight changes, temperature sensitivity, and changes in heart rate. Accurate diagnosis through thyroid testing enables appropriate treatment, helping manage symptoms and preventing complications associated with thyroid disorders.
